Introducing Dongtan where I used to live in South Korea
When I lived in Korea, I lived in Dongtan, Gyeonggi-do. As many of you have heard, the city where most Koreans live is Seoul. However, the housing prices in Seoul are very expensive.
Because of the housing prices, I lived in Dongtan, which is more than an hour away from Seoul, but now that I think about it, Dongtan was a really nice place to live.
Many people have heard a lot about Seoul, but they don't know much about Dongtan, Gyeonggi-do or the area near Seoul, so I'm going to write an article introducing Dongtan, where I lived.
Let's get started.
Dongtan, located in Hwaseong City, Gyeonggi Province, is one of South Korea's most rapidly developing planned cities. It offers a unique combination of urban convenience, modern infrastructure, and proximity to Seoul, making it particularly popular among young professionals and families.
Proximity to Seoul
Dongtan is situated approximately 33 km (20.5 miles) from Seoul, making it highly accessible for commuters and visitors. The city is connected to Seoul via several transportation options:
- SRT (Suseo–Pyeongtaek High-Speed Railway): The SRT connects Dongtan to Seoul’s Suseo Station in just 17 minutes, with trains running every 30 minutes12.
- GTX-A Line: This higher-speed subway line also links Dongtan to Seoul in approximately 20 minutes12.
- Driving or Taxi: By car or taxi, the road distance is about 47 km, taking roughly 35 minutes depending on traffic conditions9.
This excellent connectivity allows residents to enjoy the benefits of living in a quieter suburban area while maintaining easy access to the bustling capital city.
Why Young People Choose Dongtan
Dongtan has become a magnet for young residents due to several factors:
- Modern Infrastructure: As a planned city, Dongtan boasts well-organized urban layouts with state-of-the-art facilities. Its centerpiece is the Metapolis skyscrapers—four residential towers that house luxury apartments and an American-style mall13.
- Affordable Housing: Compared to Seoul’s skyrocketing real estate prices, Dongtan offers relatively affordable housing options with modern amenities4.
- Job Opportunities: The city is close to major industrial hubs like Samsung’s fabrication facilities, attracting many young professionals working in engineering and tech industries4.
- Family-Friendly Environment: Dongtan features parks like Central Park and Nojak Park with sports facilities, hiking trails, and play areas for children. These amenities make it ideal for young families3.
Why Dongtan is a better place to live than Seoul
The reason why Dongtan is a good place to live is because it has good accessibility to other areas. Seoul is a city with a lot of people and traffic is so bad inside the city like New York, so it takes a long time to get out of Seoul using the highway.
However, in Dongtan, it is very easy to get to any direction in Korea, east, west, or south. And, there is much less traffic congestion than Seoul, and there are many mountains around, so the air is much better.
Conclusion
Dongtan’s combination of modern living spaces, excellent transport links to Seoul, and family-friendly amenities make it an attractive destination for young people seeking a balanced lifestyle. Whether you’re looking for career opportunities or a peaceful environment with urban conveniences, Dongtan offers the best of both worlds.
For those who want to work or study in Korea, I recommend residing in the Gyeonggi-do region rather than Seoul. Public transportation to Seoul is well-developed in any region.
